Luton comes to life with the help of the Special Events Fund

After over a year of events and creativity grinding to a halt, in February 2022, we launched the start of a fund to support the return of community events in Luton.

Thanks to our community’s fantastic efforts to bring vibrancy, generosity of spirit and creativity back to local neighbourhoods , the Luton Rising Special Events Community Award Fund 2022 has been able to support over 14 events across the breadth of the community so far. Here are some of our highlights…

Pride in Luton

We were delighted to support Luton’s first ever Pride event, which took over the Hat District for a fabulous afternoon celebrating the diversity of Luton’s LGBTQ+ community and honouring the significant role played by Luton citizens in the fight for visibility, equality and intersectionality.

Primarily funded by Luton Rising, Luton AfroFest brought together the local community in celebration of African heritage and culture with food stalls, a fashion show, storytelling, exhibitions, and family friendly fun activities with live music and performances.

Colours of Eid Celebration

Colours of Eid featured a spectacular costume parade showcasing the creativity of Islamic culture and celebrating the community of Luton. Luton’s multi-award-winning theatre and drama education company, Khayaal Theatre, also did a session dedicated to the exploration of Muslim heritage, sharing stories about acts of kindness!

Other organisations that received funding included; Sinfonia Verdi, Stopsley United FC, Society for the Advancement of Black Arts, Lewsey Community Festival, Warden Hill Community Hall, Strathmore Avenue Methodist Church, Friends of Wandon Recreation Park, Hockwell Festival Committee, Futures House and Luton Council for Diwali.

CEO at Luton Rising, Graham Olver said;

“Thank you to everyone who applied for funding to run an event for local people in Luton. It has been fantastic to see the town back in action, and we are grateful to be able to facilitate this at Luton Rising.”

We are delighted to have committed to supporting more events in the upcoming months, including;

  • Luton Literature
  • Next Generation Youth Theatre Luton
  • Leagrave Youth Constitution
  • Children’s Party
  • TARA Parktown
  • East-Fest

Luton Rising look forward to seeing the community come together at the next events.
