Luton DART strikes chord of unity

The Luton DART’s fabulous platform piano has been officially unveiled amid a vivid kaleidoscope of sound and colour.

Donated by Hertfordshire resident Ruth Bennett, and newly painted by Luton artist Mary Hearne, passengers enjoyed a performance including Abba and Elton John classics by Icknield High School assistant headteacher Sarah Farrar, with coffee and cookies courtesy of Benjamins Café.

Anyone can play the Luton DART piano when they are passing through the upper level of Luton DART Parkway Station.

Ruth said: “The piano was originally gifted to me by Blenheim Crescent Baptist Church during my time living in Luton. When I learned that Luton DART was in need of a piano, I decided it was time to pass it on so that others could share the enjoyment.”

Celebrated local artist Mary, arts program producer with Active Luton and Luton Libraries, then transformed the piano into a work of art.

Mary said: “I wanted to create something vibrant and eye-catching that reflects the bright and airy new station, and of course I had to include blue and gold as a nod to the DART’s colour scheme.

“I hope that travellers will feel inspired to fill the station with sound for others to enjoy while going about their journey. It was great to create something positive for the community and hopefully brings a smile to people’s faces.”

Sarah’s performance at noon on Friday (27 October) brought the instrument to life, and was captured in a film created by Barnfield College media students Amira Chowdhury, Damola Oelbaum, Adil Setna, and Amelia Curran.

Cllr Javeria Hussain, Chair of Luton Rising, the Luton council company that owns London Luton Airport for community benefit, said: “I’d like to thank Ruth, Mary and Sarah for bringing together their generosity and talents to create a legacy for passengers and a memorable occasion for us all. It was great that local students were also able get it all on film.

“It was a real feast for the senses, and perfectly reflected our purpose as owner of our airport to give back to the community.”
